This painting was inspired by old New York and all the exquisite architecture that was built in the Gilded Age. Sadly most of these homes were torn down only 30 years after they were built. A few survived, this one did not. Half the time I get furious at the waste of the oligarchs of the time (or any, I suppose…) The other half of the time I think of the craftsmanship and artistry on full display that never would have been created without such opulence. This was the former residence of William Vanderbilt on 660 5th Avenue where the infamous Ava Vanderbilt aka “The Queen of NY” resided at 660 Fifth Avenue, Manhattan.
