Some pieces shown here are unfinished or never shared publicly. Usually I paint in the studio, but I also do a lot of “en plein air” work (or painting on site outdoors). Occasionally I do paint out of my home if I cant make it to the studio, in case you are wondering about the different backgrounds….

I began this painting a month ago. It has been a slow process. The idea for it, the inspiration, was born a year ago. But with everything that has been going on in my family life (my parents’ two funerals and working on the cleanout and sale of their home), it makes “painting life as usual”, not so very usual. Projects get pushed way back, the creative process delayed. But it does continue on, eventually; no matter what. It does seem to have a lot to say. Anyway, the places I get inspired to paint sometimes are areas I’ve visited or hold special meaning for me. My dad was always fascinated with Maine, appreciating nature, waking up before everyone else and enjoying the peace alone before the bustle of activity began with crowds and noise. He said the world belonged to him then. He camped here once with my brother Jerry on Mount Desert Island. Looking back, I wished that I had joined them. The island has many dramatic, sweeping views that Maine is famous for. Lots more to do. At the moment I am playing with composition and color combinations.

I recently dropped off the painting for the “Manchester, the Revolution and the War at sea” exhibit about The Revolutionary War in Manchester by-the-sea in Massachusetts. Since it will be Manchester’s 250th anniversary this year. Artists had a choice to concentrate on “The War at Sea”, “The War at Home”, “The War at Land” Their submission parameters were: “The museum seeks creative interpretations of local Revolutionary events as we aim to bridge the past and the present and highlight Manchester by-the-sea’s unique connection to this pivotal era.” I chose the “War at Home”, viewing Manchester from atop a hill in 1776: fewer homes, architecture of the time period, a view of the harbor with schooners included, as many larger boats would get stuck- the passage was not very deep. But many small boats were enlisted to assist the cause for passing along supplies, information, food for the Continental Army. The Exhibit opens Thursday, July 2nd and ends October 19, 2026. Opening Reception will be July 2nd, 6-8 pm at the Manchester by-the-sea Museum, 10 Union Street, Manchester by-the-sea, MA, USA.
This week during “Glorious Gloucester Week“, I’ve been working on a few new scenes from my balcony on the Annisquam River, below it on the grass in the shade and later in my Aunt Marion Hall’s studio in Manchester by-the-sea. I’ve included several photos of my in process progress. Enjoy!

The grid below is a series of progression photos for my Painting: Gloucester Garden. I’ve been experimenting with white lately. It definitely lightens the scene and the mood. I forgot to take more in process photos on this one! Sorry. I was already engrossed.
