Back when I was teaching, I discovered art teacher positions are few and far between. Sometimes I had to take a job as a teaching assistant to survive. This was one of those occasions. It was a huge mistake. I was bored to tears. To stay awake and keep my job, I had to focus on the only inspiring thing in the room: the teachers’ plants. I drew them on the sly and painted them once I got home. Pretty soon I had a whole new series! My colleague Jeff had this croton petra in his history classroom. The patterns and colors in it blew me away. I took it to a higher place.
